Overview & Process
If your brick paver patio or driveway has weeds growing in the joints, the polymeric sand has failed. Paver joints without proper sand fill shift under load, grow weeds, and wash out during heavy rain.
Polymeric sanding is the fix and the prevention. We pressure wash the joints clean, let the surface dry, then sweep polymeric sand into every joint and activate it with a controlled water mist. The polymers bind the sand into a flexible but solid joint that locks the pavers in place, blocks weed growth, and resists washout.
This is best done immediately after pressure washing a paver surface. The joints are already clean and open. We pair it with paver cleaning for the full restoration.
What Every Chicago Homeowner Should Know
If weeds are growing in your paver joints, the sand is gone. Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles push paver joints open and close hundreds of times each winter, and regular joint sand gets pumped out with every cycle. Polymeric sand has polymers that bind the particles into a flexible joint that moves with the pavers but doesn't wash out. The key is the installation: the joints have to be completely dry before you sweep the sand in. I've seen companies apply polymeric sand the same day they pressure wash. The moisture activates the polymers prematurely and the sand hardens on the surface instead of in the joints. It looks fine for a week, then the first heavy rain washes it out. I always schedule sanding 24 to 48 hours after washing and check the joints with a moisture meter.
What's Included
- Paver joint pressure cleaning and debris removal
- Old sand, moss, and weed extraction from joints
- Surface drying time allowance before sand application
- Premium polymeric sand swept into all joints
- Controlled water mist activation
- Excess sand removal from paver surface
- Joint compaction and second fill pass
- Cure time guidance and traffic protection
Our 3-Step Process
Clean & Dry
We pressure wash the paver joints to remove old sand, moss, and debris. The surface must dry completely before sand goes in.
Sweep & Fill
Polymeric sand is swept into every joint and compacted with a plate compactor. A second pass fills any settled gaps.
Activate & Cure
A controlled water mist activates the polymers. The joints harden within 24 hours. We mark the area. No traffic until cured.
Honest & Transparent Pricing
Polymeric sanding runs $1.50 to $3 per square foot depending on joint width and paver pattern. A standard 400 sq ft paver patio costs $600 to $1,200. Best paired with pressure washing. Ask about a bundle discount. Call (217) 722-5379.
Why Choose Moe Maintenance
Paired With Pressure Washing
We wash the joints first, then sand. Applying polymeric sand over dirty joints is a waste. It won't bind properly.
Proper Drying Time
We don't sand wet pavers. The surface dries completely before sand goes in, or the polymers activate prematurely and fail.
Compacted, Not Just Swept
We use a plate compactor to settle the sand deep into the joints, then do a second fill pass. Loose sand washes out.
Premium Polymeric Sand
We use commercial-grade sand with high polymer content, not big-box brands that wash out after the first heavy rain.

Service FAQs
How long does polymeric sand last in Chicago's climate?
Properly installed polymeric sand lasts 3–5 years before needing refresh. Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles are tough on joints, but the polymer binding resists washout far better than plain sand.
Can you apply polymeric sand to an existing paver driveway?
Yes, but the joints must be cleaned first. We pressure wash out old sand, moss, and debris, let the surface dry, then apply fresh polymeric sand. This is the standard restoration process.
How long before I can walk or drive on the pavers?
24 hours for foot traffic, 48 hours for vehicles. The polymers need time to fully harden. We mark the area and provide clear cure instructions.
Will polymeric sand prevent all weeds?
It significantly reduces weed growth. The solidified joints leave no loose organic material for seeds to germinate in. Occasional surface weeds may still appear but are easy to remove. No joint fill is 100% weed-proof forever.
