Overview & Process
Painting Chicago exteriors is a different game than painting in a mild climate. The freeze-thaw cycle tests every adhesion bond, the summer humidity traps moisture under the film, and the UV on south-facing walls fades pigment in three years if the prep was skipped.
We prep like the paint's life depends on it, because it does. We pressure wash the surface, scrape loose paint, sand rough spots, caulk gaps, prime bare wood and metal, then apply two coats of premium exterior paint. The coating system is only as strong as the surface under it.
We paint siding (vinyl, wood, aluminum, Hardie board), stucco, trim, shutters, doors, and porches. We don't paint over rot. We flag it and recommend repair first.
What Every Chicago Homeowner Should Know
Painting in Chicago comes down to two words: freeze-thaw. Your paint film expands in July at 95 degrees and contracts in January at 5 degrees. Over a 10-year life, that's thousands of expansion-contraction cycles. If the prep was rushed, painted over loose paint, didn't caulk the gaps, skipped primer on bare wood, the film cracks at the seams within two winters. I see it on Pilsen and Bridgeport two-flats all the time: a paint job that looked great in year one and is peeling at every seam by year three. The fix is in the prep, not the paint. We spend 60 to 70% of the job on prep. Washing, scraping, sanding, caulking, priming. The other Chicago-specific issue: south-facing walls take full UV for 8 hours a day and fade faster. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore Aura because they're formulated for high UV and thermal cycling.

Our 3-Step Process
Wash & Prep
We pressure wash the entire surface, scrape loose paint, sand rough spots, and caulk all gaps. This is 70% of a lasting paint job.
Prime Bare Spots
Bare wood, metal, and repaired areas get a premium exterior primer. Primer is the adhesion layer. Paint without primer on bare wood peels.
Two Finish Coats
Two coats of premium exterior paint applied by brush, roller, or spray depending on surface. Back-rolling ensures adhesion and even texture.
Honest & Transparent Pricing
Exterior house painting ranges $2,500–$8,000+ depending on square footage, surface material, number of stories, and prep required. A standard 2-story Chicago bungalow runs $3,500–$5,500. Call (217) 722-5379 for an on-site estimate.
Why Choose Moe Maintenance
Prep Is 70% of the Job
We wash, scrape, sand, caulk, and prime before painting. Paint over bad prep fails in one Chicago winter. We've seen it.
Premium Paint Only
Sherwin-Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore Aura. Commercial-grade elastomeric paints that flex with temperature swings and resist fading.
Two Coats, Back-Rolled
Two coats for coverage and durability. We back-roll sprayed surfaces to push paint into the substrate for adhesion, not just lay it on top.
Rot Flagged, Not Painted Over
We don't paint over rot. We flag damaged areas and recommend repair before painting. Covering rot just hides the problem.

Service FAQs
How often should a Chicago home's exterior be painted?
Every 5–8 years for wood siding, 7–10 years for stucco and Hardie board, and 10–15 years for vinyl (if painted with the right product). South-facing walls with full UV exposure fade faster.
Can you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, with the right product. We use paints formulated for vinyl that won't warp the siding in heat. We also advise against painting vinyl darker than its original color. Heat absorption can cause warping.
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Chicago?
Late spring through early fall (May–September) when temperatures stay above 50°F and humidity is manageable. Paint needs dry surfaces and moderate temps to cure properly. We schedule around the weather.
Do you repair rotted wood before painting?
We flag all rotted areas during the estimate. We can do minor wood repair (sister boards, filler) or recommend a carpenter for structural repairs. We never paint over active rot. It just hides the problem and the paint fails.
